California’s lineup was not doomed by one obvious pregame blunder. Drake Maye underperformed at 14.82, Jaylen Waddle gave only 1.2, Harrison Mevis managed 1, and De’Von Achane finished with 10.6 in a PPR format that usually asks more from a receiving back. Tush Push Nation also carried dead weight from A.J. Brown’s 5.6 and the Rams defense’s 1, but the damage had already been done by the top-end core. Swift alone outscored California’s kicker and defense by 25.4 points.
The clearest legal hindsight note is Parker Washington’s 19.3 on California’s bench. He could have replaced Waddle at WR or Jaylen Warren at flex, and Jared Goff’s 20.44 could have replaced Maye. Replacing Waddle with Washington and Maye with Goff adds 23.72 points, which still leaves California 10.08 short. That matters, because it keeps the analysis honest. This was a weak lineup finish, not a stolen win left sitting in plain view.
Week 2 brings Gone in 60 Saquons for California and a new backfield question for both clubs in this matchup. Minnesota placed Jordan Mason on IR Wednesday and promoted DeeJay Dallas. California already holds Aaron Jones in Tuesday’s Tony Romo roster capture: retain him and reassess his role without assigning him every vacated carry.
