There is a temptation to turn California’s bench into a courtroom exhibit. Jalen Coker scored 51 and Dontayvion Wicks scored 26 on the locked bench, but both were Sunday acquisitions whose points cannot be retrofitted into the starting lineup. Deebo Samuel Sr.’s 23 is more interesting, though his exact pre-lock acquisition timing remains unverified, so it is evidence for a Week 2 conversation, not a Week 1 conviction. The result exposes a Week 2 priority: develop receiver alternatives without pretending these final scores were known at kickoff.
The last captured Week 2 roster already features Devaughn Vele and the 49ers in place of Adams and the Rams; those moves do not rewrite Week 1. California sits 0-1 and fifth in the captured standings despite the league’s third-highest opening score. Next comes Paintin’ Manning. Carolina’s Wednesday report lists Coker limited with an ankle injury, so the receiver comparison must stay open. Limited work is progress in the evidence, not Sunday clearance.
